How Do Home Air Conditioners Work?

The most common home air conditioning design is often called a "central cooling system," which is a split system, that includes an outdoor cabinet containing a condenser coil and compressor (see sample illustrations above), and an indoor evaporator coil, usually installed in conjunction with your furnace or air handler. The compressor pumps a chemical called refrigerant through the system.

Once warm air inside your home blows across the indoor evaporator coil, its heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil. That transfer, in turn, “cools” the air. The refrigerant is pumped back to the compressor where the cycle begins again. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is moved outside your home while cooled air is blown inside. Moisture that contributes to humidity is also condensed out of the air. Your cooling system is usually combined with your central heating system because they share the same ductwork for distributing conditioned air throughout your home.  Central air conditioning not only lowers temperatures throughout a house, it dehumidifies and filters the air, leaving it cleaner and more comfortable to breathe.*

How to Make Your Air Conditioning System More Efficient?

There are plenty of things you can do to make a lasting difference when it comes to home energy management, but unfortunately, it’s easy to end up buying an air conditioning (HVAC) system that is too large (or too small) for your home, which means you could be paying to cool space that isn’t even there. Cooling your home can often be complex and confusing.  Greening” your home shouldn’t be a complicated process and Acosta Heating & Cooling welcomes the opportunity to help your home be more energy efficient all year.

As a "Dave Lennox Premier Dealer™," as well as a "Trane Comfort Specialist™," Acosta Heating & Cooling offers a wide range of high-performing and high-quality air conditioning systems for your home, such as the Lennox Signature® Collection XC21 air conditioner and the Trane Ultra Efficiency XL20iXL19i and XL16i air conditioner models.  Our high-efficiency products can provide much-needed relief from rising utility bills and energy costs, while also helping you do something positive for your community and the environment.  Further, Acosta Heating & Cooling sells and services ENERGY STAR® air conditioners, a U.S. government-sponsored program that helps homeowners save energy and protect the environment by making smart buying choices about highly energy-efficient systems, featuring the ENERGY STAR qualified label.  Choosing an ENERGY STAR® qualified product not only makes sense economically—it also makes sense from an environmental standpoint, as ENERGY STAR® products produce fewer pollutants.

How to Choose the Best Air Conditioner for My Needs?

First, take a look at your current home environment and think about your comfort needs. Start by answering the following questions:

  1. Do your heating and air conditioning bills seem too high?
  2. Are any of your current HVAC system units too noisy?
  3. Do you have a problem with humidity in the summer? Dry air in the winter?
  4. Are there rooms that are always too hot or too cold?
  5. Do you have pets or do any family members suffer from allergies?
  6. Do cooking odors linger?
  7. Do you want more control over when and how your system runs?
  8. Do you want a system that’s easy to maintain?
  9. Is your current system still covered by a warranty?

Next, bring in a professional to help you consider all your options and to plan your home air conditioning system.  An Acosta Heating & Cooling service technician will meet with you in your home and inspect your current system, including performing a structural analysis of your house to help determine the proper size and type of the air conditioning unit that will best serve your needs.

Your Acosta Heating & Cooling representative can also offer helpful advice about available financing, dealer incentives and other cost-saving opportunities to ensure that your new air conditioning system investment is affordable and remains cost-efficient in the years to come.**
